Easy Handmade Valentine’s Day Traditions for Kids
Valentine’s Day in our home has evolved over the years. When our kids where in school they got flowers and chocolate delivered in class. Big and Loud and hard to sustain. We have tried a variety of things in the fourteen years since the oldest last saw a classroom (and the youngest was born). Now, it’s a quiet celebration of love—simple, intentional, and centered on our family, and with one out of the house, I’ll be mailing her the same small token her sisters are getting.
What has worked for the most is each Valentine’s morning, the kids wake up and head to the table, where a little surprise is waiting at their seat. There’s always chocolate (because of course), and a small gift chosen with them in mind. Nothing fancy—just a reminder that they are deeply loved and thought of. The smiles on their faces tell me that they appreciate this as much as any big thing we had done before.
Some years, we include Valentine swaps—little cards or treats to share with friends, neighbors, or co-op friends. Other years, we skip them entirely. I’ve learned that traditions don’t need to look the same every year to be meaningful. What matters most is choosing what serves our family this season.
A Handmade Valentine This Year: Heart Sachets
This year, instead of buying something small, I’m making their Valentine gift.
I’m sewing heart sachets—hand-sized fabric hearts, stitched slowly and filled with love. These little sachets are designed to hold scent without direct contact. A drop or two of essential oil can be added to the fabric, allowing the benefits of the oils to be enjoyed without always applying them directly to skin or clothing.
They’re soft. They’re simple. And they feel just right for this season.
The kids can tuck them into a drawer, keep one near their bed, or hold them during quiet moments. It’s a gentle way to enjoy comforting scents while keeping things practical and family-friendly.

There’s something special about handmade gifts—especially for children. They carry a quiet message: I took time for you.
Not rushed time.
Not last-minute time.
Just thoughtful care, stitched into every seam.
Making these heart sachets has been as meaningful for me as giving them. Valentine’s Day can easily become busy or overwhelming, but I love leaning into traditions that slow us down and bring us back to what matters most.
Plus this pattern is so simple your child might be inspired to make a dozen to give to friends/family. It can be hand sewn or machine sewn, and only uses a small amount of fabric.
