One of things that lead me to write children’s picture books, is my love for children. I love seeing their faces light up when they hear a good story, or when someone takes the time to interact with them. So many adults are busy doing important adult things and all a child really craves is attention.
If your here looking for a speaker for your teens, teachers, mom’s group, or ladies day event, I have something for you, too. I stepped out of my comfort zone, to be an example of living by faith and not fear.
Topics for my visit include:
- What its like to be an author (includes a book reading session).
- Creative Writing Workshop
- 2 Day Workshop-Writing and Illustrating a Mini Book
- Living Past Your Fear (High School and Above)
- How to Publish a Book – My Story Plus Must Know Info for Aspiring Authors
What you can expect during a visit.
What its like to be an author
For younger kids, ages 2-4, I recommend the “What its like to be an author” session. When I come and speak to a group of children I bring my pet dragon. I introduce Bubbles my felt shoulder dragon to the class. He’s a great ice breaker. I read a preselected book and talk to the kids about being an author, followed by a short Q & A. My book “The Little Pink Elephant is especially good for the younger kids, because it encourages movement and the kids aren’t asked to sit still.
“What its like to be an author” is easily adapted to any age group. I have books for kids ages 2-12, all with purposeful topics.
Creative Writing Workshop
This is geared for 2-5th graders. I will walk them through the basic process of sparking a creative idea to get over writers block. The underlining message is that you don’t have to wait for inspiration to write. The goal is to have a rough draft of a complete story in the 100-500 word range.

2 Day Workshop-Writing and Illustrating a Mini Book
The first day is the same as my writing workshop, day two is all about basic illustrations. At the end the kids should each have a illustrated mini book in the 4-8 page range. A minimum of 2 hours each day is required, more time for the illustration portion is preferred.
Living Past Your Fear
This is intended to be a message about overcoming fear. I share my history of being bullied in school, of my dream of someday being published…and how my fear of rejection cost me years of living my dream. Worst of all, it set an example for the children in my life, that fear ruled.
After years of arguing with God about this, I finally set my fear aside and looked seriously at the publishing world. I want to be clear here, I was still afraid, I just wasn’t ruled by the fear.
How to Publish a Book – My Story Plus Must Know Info for Aspiring Authors
This option is like an extended version of my “Living Past Your Fear” session. I do shorten my story, and add a focus on what I learned when I set my mind to being published. The must know info about the publishing process.
