Summer Boredom Buster Series: Get Out Your Paints Sets

Let your child explore their inner artist with a variety of paints and canvases. There are so many different techniques to explore that this can be a fun escape from the mundane. I’m not talking a preplanned piece of art to match up with a book, or activity, with a set finished look or outcome. So no copying a famous artist or book series (sorry Eric Carle, we love your books, we really do).

Think exploration. Exploring paint types and techniques. Have fun. Make a ______original, or two or four.

What you need?

I can’t give you a full list but I can make some suggestions to get you started. Watch some videos and take notes then head to the store, or dig around in your art supplies and see what you have. If your budget is tight, reach out to your community, who knows maybe one of your neighbors has a kid that has moved out and left a bunch of art supplies behind, or whose interests have changed and all these supplies are just taking up space.

  • Canvases of different sizes and shapes
  • Multimedia paper
  • cardstock
  • Acrylic paint
  • watercolor paint
  • finger paints
  • oil paints (older kids, with supervision)
  • pouring medium (tip its cheaper to buy this at a home improvement store than a craft store)
  • mini cups
  • paint brushes of different sizes and shapes
  • think outside the box, pieces of nature, fruits or vegetables, etc.
