Free Printable Charlotte Mason Inspired Read-a-loud Planner Page
Are you a planner? I know I want to be, but often fail in the process. This is what lead me to purchasing an expensive curriculum. I needed that preplanned schedule all done up for me. I chose a Charlotte Mason Inspired curriculum because I had two strong readers and a newborn, my two school age kids seemed to learn best through exploring books, that pointed me in the Charlotte Mason direction to start with.
I stuck to it for 3-4 years, then things in our household changed, and I became more eclectic in my approach. I have used several planners and schedules since those first years leading me to create my own printable planner (More on that later). The goal was to meet each kids needs. Isn’t that the goal we all have?
What meeting each kid’s needs means…
Now, here I am, nine years into homeschooling, I have one graduated child, and still have two students. What hasn’t changed? I still think Charlotte Mason’s approach is awesome, but how it looks is different for each child.
My teenager gets a weekly book list along with her outside classes, and keeps several notebooks. I work at exposing her to different types of music, different types of books, and a variety of arts and crafts. I need a planner just for her, but its not very thick, I just need to keep track for college.
My elementary student is different. We still use that curriculum that I bought years ago as a base, I know that if I don’t have my planner filled out for the week, I have a back up. Phew, the stress of follow through is now mitigated.
This year we are several weeks in and I am feeling less stressed and more on target. Planning in not set in stone…
If your looking at Charlotte Mason and want to plan out your reading one week or six weeks, or thirty-six weeks at a time, then my planner can be a huge help. My advise though, is to use a pencil and be flexible. If a book just isn’t working for you or your child, then that is okay, erase it and find something that excites them to fill its spot. Its okay to let kids say “please no” to a book or author here and there.
The most important part of homeschooling is building up a safe place for kids to learn, question and grow. Don’t ever let your to do list create strife in your relationship with your child. If something isn’t working take a step back and try to find out the why and what needs to change. Even with that said, learning is not optional, what IS optional is HOW the learning happens. We are the parents and until they become 18, we are the one’s responsible for the these young people.
