12 days of Christmas Ornaments – Day Twelve How to make a Gingerbread family Ornament Set
We made it to the last day, YAY! I have been wanting to make this one from the beginning. Its not an original, but I think I managed to think outside the box, at least a little bit.
Today we are making a Gingerbread Family. Obviously making them out of gingerbread would not be good for long term storage, so I looked around and found an alternative.
I live in a high humidity, high temperature climate so before I store them I plan to paint them with a spray on clear coat.
What You Need:
- 1 Applesauce cup (4 oz)
- 1/2 cup cinnamon
- Cookie Cutters or playdough knife
- lollipop stick or skewer
- Wax paper
- cookie sheet
- White paint (optional)
- 1/2 Tbsp Cornstarch (optional, to thicken the paint)
- 1/2 cup water
- Tempura Paint
- Clear Coat spray paint
- Ribbon or thread to hang it.
Directions
Mix equal portions of Apple sauce and cinnamon till you get a playdough like consistency, maybe slightly damper than playdough. Press out on wax paper until about 1/4 in thickness. Cut out your gingerbread family using your cookie cutters or your playdough knife. Cute the lollipop stick or skewer to poke a hole in the head to hang it from.
Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 2 hrs at 200 degrees.
While baking, if you would like to decorate your Gingerbread Family, in a small pan mix your cornstarch with 1/2 a cup water. Stir over low heat until smooth and thickened. Take off of heat and cool. Stir into 1/4 cup paint. Put thickened paint into a zip lock back, and cut off the tip, like you would do for icing.
Decorate. Or leave blank and hang as is.
