DIY Ribbon Bookmarks – Kid-Friendly Craft Gift Idea

Ribbon and Charm Bookmarks

Ribbon and charm bookmarks are quick, beautiful, and make the sweetest handmade gifts! They’re simple enough for kids to create on their own and elegant enough to tuck into a favorite book for a teacher, grandparent, or friend. Plus, they can be made in just a few minutes with materials that should be easy to get.

You’ll Need

  • Ribbon (⅜” to 1″ wide works best)
  • Scissors
  • Charms, buttons, or beads
  • Needle and thread Or a wide eyed plastic needle for threading the ribbon through the beads
  • To seal Ribbon Ends: Fray Check, clear nail polish, or a lighter (adult use only)

Instructions

  1. Cut the ribbon. Measure a length about 10–12 inches long—enough to fit nicely inside a book with a bit of extra on each end.
  2. Seal the ends. Use Fray Check or dab a bit of clear nail polish to keep the ribbon from fraying. Or more advanced adults only option is to hold the ribbon above a flame and let the heat melt it.
  3. Let it dry. If you used nail polish or fray check, allow the bookmark to dry completely before moving to the next step.
  4. Add charms. Sew a charm, bead, or decorative button to each end. If using a bead, you can thread the ribbon through and tie a small knot to hold it in place. Try a small stack of beads for a fun look.

Now you have a lovely bookmark that looks store-bought but was made with heart!

Variations by Skill Level

  • Beginner: Use wide ribbon and wide hole beads—no sewing needed.
  • Intermediate: Sew beads or charms to each end for a neat finish.
  • Advanced: Layer ribbons, add lace, or attach small tassels for an elegant touch.

    Some ideas on how to gift your new creation:

    • Tuck your bookmark inside a card with a note: “Made with love for your next good book!” These are perfect for stocking stuffers or teacher gifts during the holidays.
    • Attach to a piece of cardstock that measures as long as the ribbon using a tiny bit of glue to hold it in place.
    • Tuck into a new book
    • Roll up and put into a small jewelry box that can be wrapped.
