Tips for Outside the Box Learning Series: Scouting to Direct Learning

I have three girls, but that doesn’t mean my post is only for ‘girl moms’ whatever that is supposed to mean. As moms we should know and recognize that all people have different gifts, interests, and things we need to work on. One of those things is working towards directing the hearts of our children.
Scouting can offer a great resource in that direction. Today is a great time to look into scouting because there are so many options available!
My tip today: Give scouting a look.
But I’m not outdoorsy…
Scouting doesn’t have to be all about the outdoors, and it is no longer limited to Campfire USA, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Today we have some more Christian minded groups to add to the mix, with American Heritage Girls, and Trail of Life. Not to mention Boy Scouts isn’t just for boys anymore.
Scouting is about learning to serve others, being open to learning new skills, to work on leadership qualities, and in the case of homeschooling, to direct their education through a wide variety of badge work.
What is badge work?

Badge work, is a list of requirements that need to be learned, explored, and at least attempted for a variety of topics. Each group handles badges differently, so you’ll have to check with the group that resonates with your family to find out what badge work can mean for you and your child. Not all programs are created equal so do some homework in your area. Reach out to a troop and see if you can take a look at what they are doing and how their program works in real life, not just what they websites say.
Badge Work is a tool

Like all tools you can use it for as much or as little as you like. You can turn it into a unit study, you can make it all or part of your learning, it just depends on how it fits your family.
Remember use it how it feels right for you, it’s a tool, nothing more.
