Hand or Machine Sewn Bookmarks
Sewn bookmarks are a cozy, creative way for kids to make gifts that last. Whether you sew by hand or use a machine, these fabric bookmarks are a wonderful project for little makers who love fabric, patterns, and color. They’re sturdy, easy to personalize, and perfect for gifting to book lovers of all ages!
You’ll Need
- Fabric scraps (cotton or felt work best)
- Scissors or a rotary cutter (with adult help)
- Optional: Pinking Shears (also known as zigzag scissors)
- Needle and thread or a sewing machine
- Pins or fabric clips
- Iron-on interfacing or felt for stability (choose one, but use it)
- Ribbon or lace (optional for embellishment)
- Awl (optional)
Instructions

- Cut your fabric. Cut two rectangles about 2½” x 5-7″. You can use matching or contrasting fabrics for fun.
- Add stability. If your fabric is thin, iron on interfacing or layer a piece of felt between the two fabric pieces.
- Pin the layers. Place your two fabric pieces wrong sides together (the pretty sides facing out). Pin or clip along the edges. (adding lace a in this fabric sandwich is a pretty touch.)
- Sew around the edges. Using a sewing machine or hand stitching, sew around all sides. Give it about a 3/8″inchroom all the way around.
- Trim edges with the pinking shears, this helps prevent fraying.
- Add embellishments. Stitch a ribbon or lace trim to one end for a decorative touch. If using a sewing machine, you might be able to add decorative stitching, or a circle stitch at one end. If using the circle stitch you then use an awl to puch a hole and thread some ribbon through.
