Hand or Machine Sewn Bookmarks

Sewn bookmarks are a cozy, creative way for kids to make gifts that last. Whether you sew by hand or use a machine, these fabric bookmarks are a wonderful project for little makers who love fabric, patterns, and color. They’re sturdy, easy to personalize, and perfect for gifting to book lovers of all ages!

  • Fabric scraps (cotton or felt work best)
  • Scissors or a rotary cutter (with adult help)
  • Optional: Pinking Shears (also known as zigzag scissors)
  • Needle and thread or a sewing machine
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Iron-on interfacing or felt for stability (choose one, but use it)
  • Ribbon or lace (optional for embellishment)
  • Awl (optional)
  1. Cut your fabric. Cut two rectangles about 2½” x 5-7″. You can use matching or contrasting fabrics for fun.
  2. Add stability. If your fabric is thin, iron on interfacing or layer a piece of felt between the two fabric pieces.
  3. Pin the layers. Place your two fabric pieces wrong sides together (the pretty sides facing out). Pin or clip along the edges. (adding lace a in this fabric sandwich is a pretty touch.)
  4. Sew around the edges. Using a sewing machine or hand stitching, sew around all sides. Give it about a 3/8″inchroom all the way around.
  5. Trim edges with the pinking shears, this helps prevent fraying.
  6. Add embellishments. Stitch a ribbon or lace trim to one end for a decorative touch. If using a sewing machine, you might be able to add decorative stitching, or a circle stitch at one end. If using the circle stitch you then use an awl to puch a hole and thread some ribbon through.

    • Intermediate: Try topstitching around the edges or sewing on a ribbon trim.
    • Advanced: Add embroidery, appliqué, or patchwork for a truly one-of-a-kind bookmark.

Tuck your handmade bookmark into a favorite book or Bible and tie it with a bow. Add a little tag that says, “Stitched with love—just for you!” It’s a thoughtful gift that feels both cozy and personal.
