Summer Boredom Buster Series: Baking up a House
Maybe its all the “Great British Baking Show” that I’ve been watching, or maybe its my sweet tooth, but baking as always been a favorite past time. The only drawback is, well in the summer its HOT. I don’t like to turn on my oven in the summer. So I have a plan, a multipart plan. This is what it looks like:
Plan:
- prebake gingerbread house pieces, (sugar cookie dough works well too, just use the cut out version and bake though, no soft cookies for this). Then Freeze
- Encourage the building of a solar oven. (sneaky science, lol)
- Bake in the morning.
- Explore other ways to bake outside.
Plan in Action:
- Let the kids have some fun prebaking the gingerbread house pieces, they can build one today and freeze a few for later. I found this recipe to very yummy! We use a pantry sugar cookie mix, then added they extra goodies in the recipe.
What you need:
- Recipe for gingerbread or sugar cookies
- pattern/cookie cutters for gingerbread house
- royal icing
- decorations

What you need? What ever you and your child want to bake!
4. Experiment!
I can’t tell you what you’ll need, just brainstorm with your child. Some thoughts to consider, baking over an open flame such as a camp fire. Bake in a grill with the lid closed… What every you choose make sure to take proper safety precautions.
