12 Days of Christmas Ornaments – Day Eight is “King Penguin and the Pengettes”!

When I started this, the point was to do something fun and memorable with my youngest daughter. So far 2020 is going down in history as the year we stayed home. The year of missing friends and family. I have tried to do other things to offset that. Life is a gift and we need to take steps to remind ourselves and our children of that.

So as I have seen my daughter’s enthusiasm wane, we had a serious talk. I would continue this series, but I could do it on my own if I needed too. That made her sad. So we discussed ways to make this project more fun for her. As parents, we get set on what we want to do, take a moment and get feedback from your kids.

So today, we are making “King Penguin and the Pengettes”, as my daughter has nicknamed them. I planned to make penguins today, she wanted more color, so here we have multicolored penguins, and one Ginormous Emperor Penguin. One giant penguin to rule them all!

You can make all of your penguins black and white, or pink and white, or what ever your child wants to do.

What You Need:

• Foam Balls (I used 2″ balls)
• Acrylic Paint (we tried Tempera and didn’t like the results as well)
• Paint brush
• Marker
• Googly eyes (optional, my daughter didn’t want them)
• Pompom’s (optional)
• Pipecleaner (optional)
• Felt (optional)
• Hot Glue Gun
• toilet paper cardboard (or something similar to hold the drying balls)
• small eye bolt, or something similar to hang them from.
• Thread

Directions

Take a Market and draw an outline on the ball that will be the face and belly. I made a heart shape for the face, and a circle for the belly. My daughter painted everything outside the outline. Once painted she used a toilet paper cardboard to hold the drying balls. For the Emperor Penguin I added to long narrow hears at the top of the head, we will paint the red and yellow after the bodies dry.

Once dry add any additional detail, like the eyebrows, the eyes, etc. Let dry if needed.

Heat up the hot glue gun and glue the pompoms to the sides of the head as ear warmers, glue a piece of pipe cleaner across the top of the ball connecting the pompoms.

Optionally, cut out a felt crown and glue it on.

Make a glue dot at the top of the ball and twist in the eyebolt to hang the ornament from.

Add thread and hang.
