Summer Boredom Busters: Build a Tabletop DIY Cornhole Game

The long hot days of summer leave kids bored and parents frustrated. Sometimes its just too hot to be outside, and sometimes you are traveling so much that travel size games provide the whole family with some downtime, together and off the electronics. Win win.

Today I’m suggesting building a tabletop cornhole game using a large boot box! A boot box is larger than your average shoe box, but if that is all you got, use it! Cornhole is the perfect for indoor or outdoor game, and the whole family can join in. Here’s how to make your own mini cornhole set.

Materials Needed:

  • Large boot box (or similar sturdy box)
  • Scissors or box cutter
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Paint, markers, or colored duck tape
  • Small bean bags (or make your own with fabric and rice)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Box

  1. Measure and mark a circle (about 3 inches in diameter). You’ll want it to be centered from side to side and about 1/3 of the way down the box.
    • To do this measure your box and using a ruler and pencil draw a line down the center from the top to the bottom (this should be the longest line)
    • Then measure out thirds across the box so that they cross over the center line. (there should be two lines)
    • find something circular that is 3 inches across, then line it up over the top intersection of the lines. Trace the circle onto the box.

Step 2: Cut the Hole

  1. Carefully cut out the circle using scissors or a box cutter.
  2. Make sure the edges are smooth.

Step 3: Create the Incline

  1. Option A. Seal the box closed and prop up the back of the box by placing small items (like books) underneath to create an incline.
  2. Option B. Trace an incline on the side of the box, leaving the bottom 1.5 inches deep and the top the full depth of the box, or up to 5 inches. The lid should still fit to provide a platform and a place to store the bags. If it is loose, tape it on to secure it.

Step 4: Decorate

  1. Let the kids paint, decorate the box with markers, or decorate the box with colored duct tape. They can add designs, patterns, or their favorite themes.
  2. Allow the decorations to dry completely.

Step 5: Make the Bean Bags

  1. If making your own, cut fabric into squares (2-2.5 inches on each side or half an inch smaller than the hole).
  2. Sew three sides, fill with rice or beans, then sew the last side.
  3. Make at least 4-6 bags, using two different colors for teams.
Game Rules:
  1. Place the boot box on a table or ground.
  2. Players take turns tossing bean bags onto the box, aiming for the hole.
  3. Scoring: 1 point for landing on the box, 3 points for getting it in the hole.
  4. Play to 21 points, and have fun!
Tips for Success:
  • Safety First: Supervise children when using scissors or box cutters.
  • Get Creative: Use bright colors and themes to make your game unique.
  • Indoor Fun: Perfect for rainy days or family game nights.
  • What’s next? Think of other games that you can miniaturize and give it a go.
