12 Days of Christmas Ornaments – Day Five is for the Birds
We got our Christmas tree last Friday and it is the biggest tree I can remember us having! It is somewhere between 7-8 ft tall, normally we get a Charlie Brown tree somewhere between 4-5 ft. tall. I felt a little like a miser, but my parents and my in-laws all had huge trees. Since we spent most of our Christmas season with them, my frugal self won. This year I let the kids pick out whatever tree they wanted.
So last week, one of the things my little helper was worried about when making 5 of each ornament, was the size of our potential tree. Now those concerns are not valid, and she is seeing some series ornament gaps that need to be filled.
Yay, me and my plan to make ornaments to the rescue, heehee. Today we are making bird themed ornaments. There so many awesome idea’s on Pinterest, it was hard to decide. Ultimately we decided to give painting and stencils a try again. I got one stenciled ornament, and 4 free hand birds. (Transparency alert, I did freehand the shape in maker, my daughter did the rest).
Little Birds
What you need:
- 4 inch Oval Wood Shapes
- Drill with a small drill bit, to make the hole at the top.
- Fine Sandpaper
- paints
- mod podge
- paint brushes
- stencil (I found mine at my local craft store)
- painters tape (or any tape that is easy to reposition)
- jump ring
- string or ribbon
Directions:
Drill a small hole in the top of the oval, then lightly sand it. Choose a background color and paint the oval. Let it dry completely, if needed add a second coat and let that dry, it should only take a few minutes to dry. Mod Podge over the paint and let it dry, it will take a few minutes longer than the paint, but will dry clear.
Tape your stencil in place. I like to use painters tape because it is easy to untape. Paint your bird. When the bird is dry remove the stencil I then added the year, a jump ring and ribbon.
