Encouraging Kids to be Content Through the Power of Storytime

In such an over stimulating world, we need to mindfully teach contentment to our children. Slow down, let them explore the world, and be content, not bored. My own children are not an exception. It is easy to get into a routine that is over stimulating and leaves everyone feeling like they are missing out if an hour is not filled.

What we need is a contented heart, not more activity. I wrote this story last summer while spending time with my family at the beach. Each of us was enjoying our time in different ways, but what we where not saying is how bored we where. How did I accomplish that with three kids and 3 adults? Expectations.

Expectations

That one simple concept is how you encourage contentment. Encouraging contentment and finding it though are far from the same thing. We parents must do our part, then the kids each figure it out based on their individual personalities.

When I have free time I create. We my kids have free time they do what their personalities dictate. What my expectations achieve is peace from nagging voices begging me to fill their time.

Finding Contentment

In my book “The Sloth and the Snail” the sloth is always changing directions and trying to reach something that is just out of reach. A sloth will never be fast, will never see the world, will always be a sloth. But it isn’t until the sloth meats another slow creature that he realizes their is beauty right in front of him, no need to chase after it.

What a lesson!

Model Contentment

Are you like the sloth before or after he realizes he doesn’t have to chase after anything? Reading books is a good way to open our minds to new thoughts and ideas, but if we want things to change we have to model that change.

Right now the whole world it seems has slowed down. I published this book in the middle of the pandemic because I thought it was a good time to reach people’s hearts.

How have you found contentment? Are you still working on it, don’t worry, your not alone? Just keep trying one day at a time.
